Welcoming Message from the Conference Chair
Islamic marketing has gained increasing interest from academics as well as business practitioners from all over the world. As is widely known, Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world, with over 1.2 billion adherents worldwide. Muslims today are generally getting more educated, more knowledgeable, and have higher purchasing power when compared to say 20 years ago. They are also getting more religious and as such they demand products (food, pharmaceutical, and others) that conform to their religious requirements.
Many companies, big and small, have set their target on the Muslim consumers due to the sheer size of the Muslim market. Multinational corporations, such as Nestle, Kellogg, MacDonald’s and KFC, have jumped on the Muslim market bandwagon to produce products that are acceptable to the Muslim consumers. Accreditation organizations have been set-up allover world (in Muslim and non-Muslim countries), to assist marketers to produce products that comply with the religious requirements of the Muslim market.
Despite all the stated development, research in Islamic marketing and branding is still at a rudimentary stage. With this in mind, the Faculty of Business & Accountancy, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur in collaboration with Brunel Business School, Brunel University, UK and ESSEC Business School, France are pleased to invite academics, policy makers, managers, and other practitioners to submit papers to the First International Conference on Islamic Marketing and Branding. The conference will be held on the 29-30th November 2010 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Scholarly, conceptual, empirical, case study and practitioner papers are welcomed to be considered for the conference. All papers are required to address the practical implications related to Islamic marketing or branding.
